Yesterday in English 100, we did a template experiment. Templates are kinda of like MadLibs. This was an activity to help us learn how to structure a good paragraph. Most my fellow students moaned and groaned at the idea of doing this, but me being the student I am, sucked it up and powered through it. We were to choose a topic that we know fairly well such as abortion, death penalty, etc. I'm somewhat ignorant on these mainstream topics, but after thinking for a few moments I found my topic of expertise. Here's the two paragraphs I constructed on Animal Abuse based off out templates. (The italics parts are my fill-ins)
In recent discussions of animal abuse, a controversial issue has been wether today's farm animals are wrongly treated. On one hand, some argue that animals don't deserve similar rights compared to humans. From this perspective, some people see animals simply as food, not living creatures. On the other hand, however, others argue that farm animals should be treated with care and respect. In the words of this view's main proponents, "Animals deserve to be treated humainely." According to this view, if animals are to be killed, they should at least not have to be put through suck traumatic events. In sum, then, the issue is wether animals don't matter or animals deserve rights.
My own view is that animals do deserve rights to be treated humainely. Though i concede that animals are not equal to humans, I still maintain that animals deserve to be treated humainely. For example, animals are kept in small cages and treated horribly. Although some might object that the animals will just end up in the slaughter house eventually, I reply that, they should still be given the right to a happy life without hurtful cause. The issue is important because animals do deserve the right to live without fear or madness.
Putting aside my somewhat drastic view of the topic, this writing exercise was highly beneficial to me as a writer. And I'm sure
I will discuss this topic in a later blog :)
